SRB provides update following major accident on its premises

Following the major accident at its Treurenberg premises in Brussels on 14 August, the Single Resolution Board (SRB) provides an update on its activities and the restoration of the ICT systems affected by the accident and confirms it is operational.

The accident was serious. Beyond the very sad loss of a firefighter and the injuries sustained by three other external professionals, it had a significant impact on the SRB’s premises and ICT infrastructure. The SRB immediately activated its business continuity arrangements, rapidly securing the first capabilities necessary to operate and communicate.

Since the accident, the SRB has continued to fulfil its mandate without interruption, with staff continuing their work remotely and from the SRB’s second location.

In the days following the accident, the SRB focused on restoring the specialised ICT systems supporting the work of its experts and its exchanges with banks and other stakeholders. These systems were brought back into service in a controlled and secure manner.

The SRB can now confirm that its main tools to work with banks and national resolution authorities are fully operational.

During the temporary unavailability of some ICT systems, certain activities and data submissions from banks were rescheduled, while others were handled through alternative solutions. These temporary arrangements allowed the SRB and banks to continue their work while the affected systems were being restored.

The impact on the delivery of the SRB’s work has been limited. Any outstanding bank deliverables affected by the temporary ICT disruption are being collected and processed, with the remaining exchanges expected to be completed in the coming days.

Banks can conduct their regular digital exchanges, data submissions and other interactions with the SRB. 

The seriousness and scale of the accident should not be underestimated. At the same time, the SRB’s response has demonstrated the overall resilience of its organisation, and the strength of its cooperation with the Commission and the European Central Bank, enabling it to maintain its activities while restoring the affected ICT capabilities in a controlled and secure manner.
