Álvaro López Barceló is Chair of FROB, the Spanish executive resolution authority, which has played a fundamental role in leading the process of banking sector restructuring in Spain and which is today responsible for the execution of resolution processes of financial institutions. He also represents Spain on the Single Resolution Board Plenary.

Previously, he was Director General of the Treasury and Financial Policy, responsible for regulating Spain’s banking sector, capital markets and payment systems; managing the Treasury's funding programme and cash position; promoting Spanish sovereign debt domestically and in roadshows abroad; advancing sustainable and digital finance; and contributing to the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing.

Earlier in his career, he held various senior positions within Spain’s economic administration, including Head of Funding and Debt Management, Head of Strategic Analysis and IMF/G20 Relations, Deputy Head of Competition and Economic Regulation, and Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Spanish Embassy in Morocco. He also spent three years at the European Commission in Brussels, working in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs.

He has served as Chair of the Permanent Committee for the Prevention of Money Laundering; Chair of the Interministerial Working Group on Green Bonds and Sustainable Finance; and Chair of the Financial Intelligence Committee. He has also been a member of the Editorial Board of the ICE Economic Journal; the Technical Committee of the Spanish Macroprudential Authority (AMCESFI); the Board of Directors of ENISA; the EU Financial Services Committee; the OECD Committee on Financial Markets; and the G20 Working Group on the International Financial Architecture.
