Sofia Toscano Rico is Deputy Director General in DG Horizontal Line Supervision at the European Central Bank | Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). In her role she has been responsible for a wide range of topics related to horizontal supervision including policy, supervisory methodologies, crisis management, assessment of bank’s business models and capital adequacy.
Over the years she has also represented the SSM in many EU and international fora (for example FSB, BCBS, EBA).
Sofia joined the ECB in 2014 when the ECB assumed responsibility for euro area banking supervision.
Prior to joining the European Central Bank she held various roles, both as a supervisor and as a policy-maker, taking on positions of increasing responsibility in the Portuguese Central Bank and becoming Head of Authorisations. Before that she had been legal adviser in the Portuguese Ministry of Finance and worked as banking legal expert in a Portuguese bank and in a law firm.
She has a Law Degree of the University of Lisbon and is admitted to the Portuguese Bar Association.
